VOGHERA (Italy) – S.Lorenzo Cathedral

THE CATHEDRAL

Built on the ruins of an old church, it was completed with the building of the façade by Milan-born engineer Carlo Macciachini between 1874 and 1875.
The Cathedral hosts some works by Paolo Borroni, “Our Lady of Sorrows”, in the S. Teresa chapel, the frescoes of the Cappella del Soccorso, as well as a “Madonna of Pompei” by Maserati.

THE ORGAN

This is a reconstruction of an instrument originally built by Balbiani in 1952 for the Cathedral of Pavia. The pipes of the organ, dismantled in order to allow the restoration of the church, have been sold to the cathedral of Voghera and our Company was chosen to build a new organ reusing this old pipework.

The new location of the instrument, on a new gallery over the main entrance, gave us the opportunity to present a very contemporary case and facade layout (designed by Ing. Paolo Piantanida).

A new wide facade showcasing pipes belonging to the Principal 16′ and Violone 16′ stops has been built to fit-in in the new location. The restoration of the old pipes was a big challenge in order to keep the original timbre.

The 3 manual console is located at ground floor and movable. Its cabinet design recalls the style of the 60’s, which is the period of the original construction of the Balbiani organ.

This organ has 70 stops and more than 5.000 pipes.
