Florence

THE CATHEDRAL OF florence

Santa Maria del Fiore is one of the largest churches in the world: its floor plan consists of a basilica body with three naves, which is grafted onto a presbytery area dominated by the great octagon of the immense dome, into which three apses open, each composed of five radiating chapels. The Cathedral is 153 metres long, 90 metres wide at the cross vault and 92 metres high from the floor to the dome lantern. The dedication to Santa Maria del Fiore is a clear allusion to the city's name, 'Florentia', and its emblem, the 'lily'.

THE ORGAN

The Cathedral organ consists of six pipe bodies and four consoles, all interconnected to optimise the use of the instrument for the various liturgical functions.
The attached map shows the location of the sound bodies, the highlight being the monumental 5-manual console from which the entire sound system can be played.
