Cosenza

S.MARIA ASSUNTA CATHEDRAL

Built around the 11th century in the Romanesque style and consecrated on 30 January 1222 by Cardinal Niccolo Chiaromonte, the cathedral of Cosenza, despite having changed its original iconography due to a series of restorations from the 16th to the 20th century, immediately benefited from Cistercian contributions from Latium and Burgundy.

Originally, the cathedral was built in Romanesque style and later, after the earthquake of 1184, the façade was renovated according to Cistercian criteria.

THE ORGAN

The new large organ for the beautiful Cosenza Cathedral is located on the right side of the presbytery: the imposing sound box, containing the different sounding bodies, is articulated in vertical elements that divide the perspective pipes, all sounding, according to their role. The important overall dimensions will be: width m. 7.60 depth m. 2.50 height m. 11.00.
The curved shape of the front, typical of transalpine organ building, creates a striking dynamic effect that extends to the sides, aesthetically lightening the visual impact from the aisle.
The instrument has the console in the centre of the plinth while the transmission is mechanical self-registering (suspended type) for manuals and pedal and servo-assisted for register control.

The new organ for the Cosenza Cathedral is an instrument aimed at maximum versatility; this does not imply adherence to eclectic stylistic features, but rather wants to give performers the opportunity to range over a vast portion of the organ repertoire.
There is no doubt, however, that the organ has a distinctly romantic-symphonic connotation with a particular focus on the 19th-century French school. This character, although re-interpreted in a modern key and with generous concessions to northern European aesthetics, is a guideline in structuring and harmonising the instrument's sound balances.
